May is Volcano Awareness Month
The Open House will take place on May 10, 2025 during Volcano Awareness Month in Washington and Oregon.
Volcano Awareness Month is held during the month of May, the anniversary of the catastrophic May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens. The eruptions of Mount St. Helens during the 1980s and again between 2004 and 2008, were defining moments for volcano science and crisis response. They demonstrated the value of scientists, officials, and the public working in partnership to be prepared for the next eruption of a Cascade volcano.
2025 marks the 45 year Anniversary of the eruption and the establishment of the Cascades Volcano Observatory.
