Lava Canyon

Where geology comes alive — stark, dramatic, and unforgettable.

At the Lava Canyon Interpretive Site, discover Mount St. Helens’ explosive history in a landscape shaped by ancient lava flows, powerful waterfalls, and the raw forces of erosion. This unique, higher-elevation setting showcases nature’s ability to transform and reshape the land.

Begin your journey on Lava Canyon Trail #184, an easy-to-access trail that quickly immerses visitors in stunning scenery. As you walk along the trail, you’ll encounter a deep canyon carved by mudflows, framed by striking basalt cliffs, and highlighted by a breathtaking waterfall plunging over a prehistoric lava flow.

For those seeking a little more adventure, continue on the Lava Canyon Trail beyond the paved section to experience more challenging terrain — narrow paths, and steep drop-offs — all rewarded by dramatic views of the canyon and surrounding South Cascades landscape.
