Climbing information - Permits

Everyone must have a climbing permit to be above 4,800 feet elevation on Mount St. Helens.
The permit system helps to protect the volcano’s physical and biological features and processes, reduces crowding, and provides climbers with information on climbing conditions, Leave No Trace principles, and safety. The permit system has been in effect since 1987.

1.  Mount St. Helens climbing permits are administered by Mount St. Helens Institute (MSHI) through an online vendor.
The MSHI online vendor is a secure website that accepts all major credit and debit cards. Climbers will be emailed a permit purchase confirmation receipt at the time of purchase.
2.  The total permit fee of $22 includes a service charge which goes towards MSHI’s Mountain Stewards Volunteer Program to help maintain and protect the climbing routes. Climbing permits are not refundable. If climbing is suspended by the Forest Service, permit sales will also be suspended.
3.  From April 1 to October 31 climbing permits are available online by advance purchase only.
Do not wait until the day of your climb to purchase your permit.
Unsold permits may be purchased online until 24-hours before the date of the climb.
4.  Once you complete your permit purchase through the online vendor, all sales are final.
Refunds are not possible. You cannot change climbing dates once your purchase is complete. Please plan accordingly before completing your purchase.

Mt St Helens Cellars
Mt St Helens Cellars

Mt St Helens Cellars Winery is nestled in the hills of Silverlake, Washington. The view of Mount St. Helens provides a picturesque backdrop for the winery. We offer an array of red and white wines made from grapes grown in Washington State, each of which is sure to please the palette as well as the senses. Even though we are a new winery, making wine is not new to us.

Our winemaker, Gary has been making wine for over 20 years, the first eight years in the Santa Clara Valley of California. About ten years ago Gary and his wife June moved back to southwest Washington where they grew up. Gary continued making wine here in Washington, travelling each year to eastern Washington to purchase grapes for his hobby. As time passed and the hobby grew into a passion Mount St. Helens Cellars erupted onto the landscape in the shadows of the mountain.

Mt St Helens Visitor Center

Mt St Helens Visitor Center is a world-class facility located on the western shore of Silver Lake. With its high ceilings and massive windows, the outdoors becomes a part of the architecture. Your senses will come alive as you enjoy the interactive exhibits, a step-in model of the volcano and theater programs that are offered twice an hour. Outside, a mile-long trail takes you into marshy plains surrounding Silver Lake where you can see waterfowl and a picture-perfect view of the mountain.

Make sure to take in one of the comprehensive presentations on the historical and cultural significance of the area. View exhibits showing the chronology of events leading up to the eruption and see the working seismograph. On your trip to Mount St. Helens, Silver Lake Visitor Center is the closest to I-5.

The Mount St. Helens Visitor Center opened its doors to the public a few years after the monumental eruption of Mount St. Helens. Functioning as a gateway to the mountain, over 30 miles away, our goal is to educate visitors on the historical significance of the landscape before and during the eruption. We also focus on the resulting impact on nearby ecosystems. Our vantage point offers a view of the Western slope of the mountain, visible from both our center and walking trail.

This unique building features expansive windows providing a glimpse of towering second-growth forest all around. A high archway and elaborately carved wooden columns contribute to the feeling of magnificence. Inside, visitors can enjoy a variety of interpretive displays that include comprehensive information on local history, geology, and re-growth and recovery of the land in the years immediately after the eruption.

Displays include:

Large, step-in model of the volcano
functioning seismograph and live feed of current Mount St. Helens volcano seismicity
Chronological timeline of events leading up to the volcanic blast on May 18, 1980
Theater program offered twice an hour; at :05 and :35 after.

Outdoors, visitors can explore Silver Lake along the 0.6 mile-long trail, including boardwalks over the wetland where a variety of aquatic plants and migratory waterfowl can be viewed at different times of the year.

Visitor Center Hours:

McMenamins Kalama Harbor Lodge

McMenamins Kalama Harbor Lodge

C’mon by to experience the tropical-inspired oasis along the Columbia River.
Welcome to the latest McMenamins property, Kalama Harbor Lodge, nestled between Kalama’s landmark totem poles and the marina at the Port of Kalama. Inspired by the Hawaiian heritage of John Kalama, the property is reminiscent of the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Whether in the Cloud Bar atop the building, with a birds-eye view and the signature Three Rocks Rum Daiquiri, or enjoying free live music in the Lounge before wandering out to a firepit alongside the river, you’re sure to feel the relaxation of an island vibe while taking in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Stay the night in one of the 40 guestrooms with private bathrooms and individual lanais, most of which have a river view and welcome pets. Take a moment to read the posted historical accounts of each room, such as the Doty Fish Co. story in Room 208, or The Cowlitz Tribe in Room 206.

The Pub and Harbor Lounge – which houses the glassed-in Holoholo Room -- also allows for expansive fair-weather dining with a wrap-around outdoor patio. Enjoy free live music in the Harbor Lounge on select weeknights as you dine on Cedar Plank Salmon or the Expedition Elk Burger. Watch our brewers through the large front window as they craft the Pau Hana Gold Ale and more in the seven-barrel brewery, just inside the main door. Step inside Harbor Lodge Market to find McMenamins gear and handcrafted beverages, including growler fills, espresso, and bottles to-go.

Follow the path paralleling the river to discover Ahles Point Cabin, and warm up next to a fireplace inside or out, enjoying a handcrafted ale while watching boats come and go.

Historical significance and artifacts abound throughout, such as the serpent carving from a Chinook artist, and watch for masks peering at you, along with other artifacts from the Northwest and many tropical islands. Look even further for two secret rooms….
Consider Kalama for your next meeting and event, or upcoming wedding. Our Old 97 Private Events room(s) are for up to 120 people (standing). For more information and to inquire about booking private events, please visit our events website.

Similar architecture can be found today in Kalama in an 1870s structure that was the Northern Pacific Railway's hospital. John Kalama -- originally of Kula, Maui -- lived in the area as an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company. The Kalama River and the city both bear his name. Descendants of John Kalama are members of the Nisqually and Warm Springs Tribes.

Three Rivers Golf Course

The Three Rivers Golf Course, an 18-hole course established in 1983 next to the Cowlitz River, is owned by the Kelso-Longview Elks BPOE 1482. The course is built on a base of material deposited in the Cowlitz River by the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens and removed by dredging. This porous combination of ash, dust, sand and silt drains well in wet weather, and golfers commute here from up and down the I-5 corridor when other Northwest courses are too soggy to play. The poa annua (annual bluegrass) greens putt well all year, and the winter rye fairways hold up well.

Four sets of tee boxes accommodate golfers with more or less length to their game. This Robert Muir Graves design plays almost 6,700 yards from the longest (blue) tees, with a men’s Course Rating of 71.7 and Slope of 128. Course length from the shortest (red) tee boxes is 5,393 yards, with a ladies’ Course Rating of 70.4 and Slope of 119.
