The Hulda Klager Lilac Festival promises to awaken your senses.

Explore the grounds of this 1877 estate and breathe in the essence of pure lilac. Allow your eyes to dance across the amazing variety of lilacs and exotic shrubs and trees.

Hulda's gardens came about because of her desire to create a better apple for pies after reading a book about hybridizing. In 1905, she began working with lilacs, and by 1910 she had successfully created 14 new varieties. Ten years later she had developed so many new types of lilacs that she decided to hold an open house each spring so that everyone could see her flowers in bloom

The Victorian farmhouse was built by Hulda's parents. It can be toured daily during the festival; tours must be scheduled one week in advance. The home contains most of its original furnishings and displays handmade quilts, art work, antiques and collectibles. Hostesses are available in each room to answer questions about the furnishings and displays.

Other buildings on the property have also been restored. The old carriage barn has become the home for a quaint gift shop. Open only during the festival, it offers lilac plantings and gifts.

The Lilac Gardens is also the perfect place for weddings and other outdoor events during the summer. Information is available at the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, 115 South Pekin Road, Woodland, WA 98674, or by calling 360.225.8996.
