Kalama is a growing community of 1,700 people, located off Interstate 5 at Exit 30. Interstate 5 dissects the city with downtown on the eastside and commercial/industrial and recreation on the west side.
Founded in the late 1840's, Kalama was named after John Kalama, a Hawaiian native who settled in the area after marrying the daughter of a Nisqually chief.
Today, Kalama is a diverse community with a growing economic base. Downtown is quaint with numerous antique shops, restaurants, a motel, grocery stores and a variety of service businesses, all within easy walking distance. Kalama claims two interesting attractions. The first is a colorful 140-foot tall totem pole located in the Marine Park, the tallest one-piece totem in the world. The second is the fish hatchery on the nearby Kalama River. It was the first one in the State of Washington.
Kalama is ideally situated for commerce as Interstate 5, the primary north-south rail line and the mighty Columbia River directly access it. This is evident at the Port of Kalama with its many industries. The Columbia River also means there are plenty of water activities to experience. A large marina and adjacent park make getting to the water easy and enjoyable.
